The University of North Carolina's School of Nursing was established, concurrent with the University Medical Center, as a result of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission's 1946 recommendations. The School's first Dean was appointed in 1950 and its first students admitted in the fall of 1951. Today the School offers coursework leading to both baccalaureate and graduate degrees in nursing. The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. The governing body of the University, from its founding until 1932, was a forty-member Board of Trustees elected by the General Assembly.
